NACCCA Election Report July 2005

Paul Fu, Ph.D.
E-ballots were sent out to all NACCCA members who are on our
active email directory on June 24th, 2005 and twenty-one responses
were received by the closing date of July 8th, 2005. All the
respective candidate nominated below were elected to their various
positions as listed below and approved by the Board. The elected
candidates below will assume responsibilities after the July
27, 2005 Annual NACCCA banquet meeting in Florida, held in conjunction
with the AACC annual meeting. Please join me in congratulating
these new officers.
James Tung, PhD (President-Elect, July 2005-June 2006)
Dr James Tung is the Vice-President of R&D at Applied Biotech
Inc., San Diego, CA. Originally from Taiwan, Dr Tung obtained
his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University in Massachusetts,
followed by postdoctoral training in Michigan State U. Dr Tung
has worked extensively in the IVD arena, working as a senior
project scientist at Beckman Instruments (1972-1987), R&D
Director at Scantibody Inc (1987-1988), R&D Director at
Microbics Inc (198801991), R&D Manager at Hycor Biomedical
Inc (1991-1997) followed by his current position since 1997.
Currently he leads a team of 23 employees overseeing a product
line that include numerous drug assays and other infectious
assays. Dr Tung has been a long-time member and supporter, and
is currently the secretary of NACCCA
Teresa Wong, BS (Secretary, July 2005-June 2007)
Teresa obtained her BS Degree in Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry
from University of State, Hayward California and was certified
for Clinical Data Management from UC San Francisco, School of
Medicine. This coming summer of 2005, she will be graduating
from UCI Extension for Clinical Trial and Drug Development Program.
Teresa is actively working in various departments of pathology,
oncology, cardiology and infectious diseases as a quality control
and quality assurance analyst for clinical data management in
research institute, hospitals and bioinformatics centers in
counties of Riverside, Orange and San Diego. Teresa is eager
to become more involved with NACCCA and thus is running for
this position.
Run-Zhang Shi, PhD, MD (Treasurer, July 2005-June 2007)
Dr Run-Zhang Shi is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Clinical
Chemistry, TDM and Forensic Toxicology at Department of Pathology,
Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He obtained
his Ph.D. in Cancer Biochemistry from the University of Sydney,
Australia, and his M.D. from Fu Dan University, Shanghai, P.
R. China. He has spent a number of years in academia and industry
as postdoctoral fellow, scientist and research associate, conducting
research in the areas of leukemia diagnostics, microarray and
diagnostic assay development. Dr. Shi’s research interests
include chromosome translocations, clinical applications of
microarray and other contemporary genomics methodologies, and
DNA mutations. His experience encompasses molecular and cellular
biology, and techniques such as microarray, multiplex PCR and
RT-PCR, capillary electrophoresis and HPLC. Dr. Shi is currently
an AACC member, a member of the editorial board of newsletter
of the Molecular Pathology division of AACC. He is also the
recipient of 2005 Chicago Section AACC Lemuel J. Bowie Young
Investigator Award.
Ching-Nan Ou, Ph.D (Historian, July 2005-June 2007)
Dr Ou is Director of Clinical Chemistry, Department of Pathology
at Texas Children's Hospital, and a Professor of Clinical Pathology
at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He obtained his
B.S. in Agricultural Chemistry from National Chung-Hsing University,
Taichung, Taiwan and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Texas Tech
University, Lubbock, Texas. Following his post-doctoral training
in Biochemistry at the Johns Hopkins University, he further
pursued in a post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Chemistry
in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester,
Minnesota. He was then employed by the Baylor College of Medicine
as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology and subsequently
promoted to the current rank of full Professor. Dr. Ou's research
interests include the clinical applications of high performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC), therapeutic drug monitoring, pediatric
clinical chemistry, glycated hemoglobin as diabetic marker,
and diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias. He has
published more than 100 peer reviewed papers and book chapters
and served as consultant for various diagnostic companies, hospitals
and state laboratories. He is a Fellow of National Academy of
Clinical Biochemistry and presently a member of the American
Association for Clinical Chemistry, Academy of Clinical Laboratory
Physicians and Scientists, International Association of Pediatric
Laboratory Medicine, North America Taiwanese Professor Association,
and NACCCA. He served as President of the NACCCA in 1986.
